Essay writing is a very important of a student’s academic life. Essays are given as assignment quite frequently to students at all levels of education. These levels include both school and college. While they are given in the initial years of schools to introduce children to the practice of writing frequently, they are given essay to write in the later years of school to judge how well the student writes. Based on this they are awarded marks. In colleges the criterion is slightly different. Students in college are also awarded marks based on how well they write their essays, but the main aim is to see how well the students express their personal views and opinions on a particular subject.
Essay writing is given as an assignment on a variety of topics. These topics could belong to a number of subjects right from science to commerce and from economics to history. Along with the variety of topics there are also a variety of different types of writing essays. There are descriptive essays, narrative essays, process essays, definition essays and many more. One of the very commonly given types of essay assignment are the compare or contrast type of essay.
This type of essay required the writer to choose two subjects that the readers are quite familiar and well acquainted with. Generally the writer should choose topics that are popular among people and ones which are also well known. Many people are not knowledgeable about terms and keywords of slightly out of the box topics. For this reason familiar topics must be chosen. Any two subjects should be chosen and then they should be kept side by side and analyzed. When we compare them then we should make a list of all the similarities between then. And when we talk about contrasting the two subjects in essay writing, we should simply make a list of the differences between them.
There are many steps to writing a good essay. To start on the right note the writer must first make the objective of his essay absolutely clear to the readers. The essay is no good if the reader does not immediately come to know the purpose of the written essay. At the beginning of the essay itself the reader should understand easily and in a few words, what the essay is trying to convey to him or her.
The abovementioned type of essay, the compare or contrast type of essay writing must first begin by stating the subjects being analyzed and the purpose of analyzing them. This should form the introduction and objective of the essay. The first part of the essay assignment should be the comparison part. The writer must make a detailed list of all the similarities between the two subjects in an easy to understand manner. The second part of the essay should be the contrasting part. The writer must again, in a very detailed way, list the points of dissimilarities between the two subjects.
Many times during essay writing writers do not compare or contrast the subjects. They only do one of these two things. That is, they either only compare or only contrast. This is done by writers for mainly two reasons. One reason is where, for example, the writer has enough similarities but not enough differences. Then in this case, the writer simply removes the differences part so that the reader don’t see that he doesn’t know about this section. The other reason for doing so is when writers want to avoid giving the readers the impression that they are thinking on two opposites.
